October 29 is World Psoriasis Day. The theme of World Psoriasis Day 2023 is ”Access for All”. World Psoriasis Day has been celebrated on October 29th for more than a decade. Today, World Psoriasis Day is observed in over 70 countries.

Psoriasis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease in which the immune system becomes overactive, causing skin cells to multiply too quickly. Patches of skin become scaly and inflamed, most often on the scalp, elbows, or knees, but other parts of the body can be affected as well. Scientists do not fully understand what causes psoriasis, but they know that it involves a mix of genetics and environmental factors.

Having psoriasis carries the risk of getting other serious conditions, including: a) Psoriatic arthritis, a chronic form of arthritis that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints and places where tendons and ligaments attach to bones (entheses); b) Cardiovascular events, such heart attacks and strokes; c) Mental health problems, such as low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression; d) People with psoriasis may also be more likely to get certain cancers, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, osteoporosis, uveitis (inflammation of the middle of the eye), liver disease, and kidney disease.

People with psoriatic disease must have affordable access to the right treatment at the right time. Today the treatments for psoriatic disease are better than they have ever been, and research into holistic care is advancing every day. Now we must ensure that good care is reaching the right people. Join advocates from around the world to fight for access to care.

Everyone living with psoriatic disease deserves access to quality care — regardless of their income or geography. On October 29th, the global community unites for action. Join us!
